BERNARD CAR – THE PIONEER OF TUNA FISHING IN PACIFIC
Eleanor Carr De Bellis
Sažetak
This article, first published in San Pedro daily newspapers in 1988, describes the progress of fishing and fishing industry in Los Angeles during a period preceding the WWII. The author's father Bernard Car, born in 1892 in Crikvenica, was one of the participants in the enterprise of construing the large tuna boats, designed for open ocean fishing. A new ship, named Paramount, was built in 1937. She disposed of a storeroom, capable of storing 300 tons of fish in specially cooled brine, which enabled longer trips and bigger tuna catch. With her captain Bernard Car the ship traced and fished tuna along the coast of South America and discovered new fishing-grounds for the fishing fleet of San Pedro.
