Sažetak

distance and weaker ties to the country of origin have resulted in unique patterns of
this diaspora’s social development. It is marked by an intensified process of assimilation
into New Zealand society, while a significant part of the community, in terms of
origin, primarily highlights a regional Dalmatian identity over a national Croatian
one, given that the vast majority of immigrants originate from Central Dalmatia. The
aim of this study is to analyse the development of this diaspora from the perspective
of emotions as a foundation for its formation. The focus will be on Auckland, where
the largest community of settlers and their descendants was established. To achieve
the primary goal of the study, ten archived interviews, conducted using oral history
methods with New Zealanders of Croatian descent, will be interpreted. These
interviews are held in New Zealand libraries. Special emphasis will be placed on the
methodological challenges of analysing this type of source. Within the established
theoretical framework, the collective and individual activities of diaspora members
are recognised as the emotional foundation upon which both individual and group
identities are (re)constructed. The process of (re)constructing their identity was based
on daily activities, particularly in areas of the city with a high density of settlers, and
through the activities of immigrant clubs and associations. Through socialization,
these daily practices became ritualised, providing a framework for the expression of
emotions, mobilisation of diaspora members, and community development.
