Abstract

In this paper, drawing upon an analysis of the parish records of births, marriages
and deaths in Gallesano-Galižana, the author looks at the demographic evolution
of the town in the second half of the nineteenth century, one of the most dynamic
and most complex periods of Istrian history marked by various phenomena and
processes that left a profound mark on the demographic, as well as the political,
economic and cultural fabric of the entire peninsula. The research mainly focused
on the aspects and phenomena of the crisis, with particular attention to epidemics,
attempting to contrast the data both at a synchronic level, i.e. to those of other Istrian
localities of the period, and the diachronic level, i.e., the data relating to Gallesano-
Galižana over the previous years and centuries. Furthermore, the research also
explores some anthropological and culturological aspects derived from an analysis
of parish records, such as anthroponymy. The paper includes graphs, tables and
other annexes, which allows for easier and deeper insight and comparison of the
data presented.
