THE CROATS ON BORNEO–THE ISLAND «CAR»: A TESTIMONY OF OUR PEOPLE IN THE WIDE WORLD

Abstract
Captain of the frigate and hydrographer (later admiral) TOBIAS OESTERREICHER, born at Maribor in 1831, wrote about the participation of the Croat crew when discovering the island of BORNEO. One of them, MATE CAR, discovered one of the islets, and for his merits he received a medal from the Austrian emperor FRANCISCUS JOSEPHUS, and hence the islet was named «CAR» after him.
