CULTURAL IDENTITY OF NOVI VINODOLSKI: Historical Background of the Cultural Heritage of Novi and the Active Cultural Life Today

Every place has some characteristics by which it deffers from other places. These characteristics make its identity. What makes the identity of Novi Vinodolski? This article mentions only some characteristics – those regarding towns cultural identity. The identity of Novi is very specific because the town is one of important cultural regions of Vinodol, Littoral region, Adriatic and Croatia. The rich cultural activity continues today. It is partly analysed and understood by the inhabitants, but not completely. The history of Novi is very long and this thesis is confirmed by very old monuments from Iliric, Greek and Roman periods. The culture from the Frankopan period on has been studied much more. Many people heard of Novi because of the ruins of the Frankopan castel and monastery, churches and old houses in the old town parts. This and other mentioned places partly contain rich
cultural heritage. We have written documents that describe folkloristic traditions, ways of life, corageous battles against many tribes and armies. In more recent times Novi is represented by writers: aside from Strahimir Kranjčević, members of the numerous Mažuranić familiy, Ivana Brlić Mažuranić, Ivan Vončina, Franko, Maks i Vlado Potočnjak and recent authors David Kabalin, Mladen Deranja, Tomislav Karlović Krš, Amalija Zoričić, Gojko Sokolić Kozarić, Miroslav Ježić, Fedor Mudrovčić, Franjo Deranja, Drago Žanić, Vera Sokolić, Ivica Dražić... They gave to Novi its cultural identity and made it become what it is today.
