ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH OF THE ANCIENT LOCALITY "SPORTS GROUND" IN CRIKVENICA
Goranka Lipovac Vrkljan
Abstract
Preliminary archaeological research on the locality ‘Sports ground’ in Crikvenica was performed during July and August of 2004 and it attempted to give some answers to questions connected to earlier archaeological findings dating back to the Ancient Roman period on a locality in close proximity to the archaeological dig from 2004. A large number of building and usable ceramic fragments were found of which the most prominent are the large number of amphora fragments. The movable archaeological material can be dated to the first century AD. Apart from the ceramic that is of the same make and colour, a large number of baked ceramic fragments, fire-clay bricks as well as a substantial number of amorphous shapes were found. An especially prominent find is the workshop seal of Seksta Metilija (Mutilija) Maksima. On the floor level parts of a ceramic fireplace was found. The results of initial archaeological research of the locality ‘Sports ground’ in Crikvenica suggest the presence of a local ceramic workshop.
