Abstract

Dramalj is a tourist town west of Crikvenica. Traces of settlement in this area date back to the ancient Illyrians and Romans. The first Croats settled here in the 14th and 15th century. The town in today’s aspect developed in the 19th and 20th century and is made of a few smaller architectural entities. The coastal part was settled in the last few decades as a result of an intensive tourism development. In the last one hundred and fifty years Dramalj has developed from an agrarian-fishing village to a modern tourist town that is very recognizable. The central area, after which the whole area was named, was earlier called Zagori or Dramalj. After the autonomy of the parish in 1809 to 1958 it was called St Jelena, after the name of the town and parish’s patron saint. After that the old name was returned. The important places for the social life in the past were the Parish Church St Jelena, the Primary School, Cultural Centre, library and reading room, Community Centre and in recent times the Tourist Board.
