Sažetak
This paper aims to examine the diplomatic strategies and actions employed by the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) in order to gain the favour of the Bosnian governors and their assistants. In addition to persuasive discourse enriched with compliments and flattery, an indispensable element of Ragusan diplomacy consisted of gifts that clearly reflected not only the political hierarchy of their recipients but also the social customs, health concerns and consumer preferences of the Bosnian court. The favour of the Bosnian governors was important for Ragusans, as these governors wielded significant influence in upholding the privileges prescribed by the Dubrovnik ahdname. To understand the effective implementation of the ahdname, the study considers the cooperation of three administrative levels: the Porte as a decision-maker, the Bosnian governor as an administrative intermediary, and local officials as executive agents. Within this framework, the paper seeks to determine both the effectiveness and the territorial reach of the Bosnian governors’ political power, and to identify the administrative level at which the proper functioning of Ottoman-Ragusan relations was disrupted.
