Abstract

This article will try to analyze characteristics of populism in France. The first part of the article presents a theoretical framework and brings insight into the concept of populism, characteristics of populism, types of populism, circumstances causing populism and its growth during last two decades, as well as the threat of populism to modern democracy. By comparing populism in France to populism in other countries, we will try to point out similarities, but also the differences. The work aims to analyze the substantive and stylistic characteristics of populism. The second part of the article, using the method of content analysis, is trying to give an insight into the characteristics of populism in France. The appearance of populism in France was analyzed in its substantive and stylistic form. The analysis shows that populism is present and on the constant rise, especially right-wing populism. It also shows the strong polarization of French society and the presence and growth of far-right and far-left populism. The results of the analysis show the growth of populism and give us an insight into the content and style of the most important populist figures in French contemporary politics, such as Marine Le Pen, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Emmanuel Macron, Éric Zemmour, Philippe Poutou, but also the role of the Yellow Vest movement and the populist features that characterize it. The analysis shows the advantage and supremacy of right-wing populism.
