Abstract

By examining the works of Günter Grass, Ranko Marinković and François Rabelais in the context of the tradition of Menippean satire, the article proposes a parallel reading of the novel The Tin Drum, the short story "The Skirt" and the novel Gargantua and Pantagruel. Drawing on Kristeva's reflections on the subject of abjection, as set out in her study „The Powers of Horror“, it examines how the thematization of the mystery of a literary text is revealed through an analogy with the mystery of femininity. Starting from Kristeva's understanding of the "abject object of literature" as an "impossible object"," the analysis of the works of Grass, Marinković and Rabelais points to the identical motif complex of "books as skirts", a complex that reveals how the problem of femininity intersects with the exploration of the essence of literature.
