Sažetak

Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) is one of the most commonly used perennial cool-season grass species in agriculture, horticulture, and landscape architecture due to its adaptability, resilience, and aesthetic qualities. It is popular in ornamental and sports turf as it tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions, forms a dense, carpet-like sward with an attractive emerald-green color, and exhibits high resistance to traffic and trampling while recovering quickly from mechanical damage. Compared to other species, such as perennial ryegrass, it better withstands high temperatures and drought, making it suitable for conditions in Croatia. The visual and functional characteristics of Kentucky bluegrass place it at the forefront when selecting species for ornamental lawns. Due to its dense sward and traffic resistance, it is ideal for sports fields, particularly football pitches. On golf courses, it is primarily used for fairways and rough areas. A large number of cultivars enable its adaptation and use in various conditions and purposes, making Kentucky bluegrass a key species for ornamental, sports, and functional turf, especially in mixtures with other grasses.
