A Tribute to the Knowledge Regarding Dr. Franjo Rački’s Family: Genealogy and Correspondence

Sažetak
Dr. Franjo Rački – ecclesiastic, political and cultural worker, and historiographer
– was frequently the subject of researches, mainly of scientific ones. Nevertheless, only
a few tributes were dedicated to the research of his family genealogy. Thanks to the
digitization of the registry books, the paper offers newer and more complete contributions to his family tree. Franjo Rački’s correspondence kept at the Archives of the
Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb as part of his legacy offers a tribute
to the knowledge regarding his relationship with individual members of his nuclear
and extended family. In total, eleven letters addressed to him, and six letters this man
of Fužine addressed to various members of his family, have been preserved. Inter alia,
his brother Anton/Tone writes to Franjo informing him of grave financial difficulties
he had found himself in, of a part of his possessions having been confiscated, and that
the possessions of Dr. Rački himself would be seized the following time. In case the
latter did not suffice, the possessions of other members of his family would be confiscated too. Correspondence with his brother Vatroslav bears witness to the assistance
Franjo provided to his brother regarding publishing of his writings related to the field
of forestry. Dr. Rački further mentions in his letters the collaboration with Bishop Josip
Juraj Strossmayer. The care for his sisters – in particular for his sister Marija, and his
nephews, is visible from the letters too.
