Historical aspects of the basic determinants of the teaching process

Abstract
School as an institution and teaching as the most important process in that institution is deeply rooted in all known civilisations. In order to determine the basic determinants of the teaching process and to think futurologically about the determinants of contemporary teaching procedures, it is necessary to at least “peak into“ the past and to “plunge into” the present, which is the objective of this paper. The historical review in this paper emphasises the key elements that influenced the main determinants of the teaching process and includes the deep roots in pre-Christian era, the beginnings of Christianity with the reflection on the teaching process, the medieval teaching process, the influence of humanism and Renaissance on teaching, teaching in a socialist society, and the influence of democratic social relations on teaching. By stressing the main determinants of the teaching processes from the past, the questions whether the contemporary teaching will dismiss the legacy of prior civilisations, whether it will make only few changes or whether it will be thoroughly restructured remain open.
