Some apects of the psychodynamism of the preadolescent
Mihály Szentmártoni
Abstract
In the first part of his study the author delineates the major characteristics of the preadolescent age according to two different approaches. The cross-sectional approach of H. Remplein points out the need to search for order in the world as a major characteristic of this age. The longitudinal approach of D. Ausubel puts an emphasis on the process of desatellization. Blending these two approaches in the second part of his study the author gives his understanding of the religious situation of the preadolescent. He finds that the classical approach to religious education which emphasized an image of God as sustainer of the order in the world is insufficient for the children of modern age where the influence of father has declined. A new approach is suggested: an “Exodus-model". The elements of the new model for religious education are: education for maturity (capacity for living with uncertainty), and style of life (living with goals). The image of God offered to preadolescents should be that of universal love.
