Abstract

The article explores themes from the philosophy of history developed by the Russian philosopher Nikolai Berdyaev in his work Il senso della storia, which serves as the fundamental starting point for our reflections. The uniqueness of Berdyaev's attempt at a philosophy of history is presented first. Our author offers some significant reflections on history, on the historical, on the meaning and progress of history, on the relationship between freedom and history, and on metaphysics and history. This is followed by thoughts on the contribution of Judaism to the philosophy of history and the author’s view of the uniqueness of the Christian contribution to the understanding of history and to the philosophy of history. Finally, the important category of Tradition is presented and its significance for understanding history.
