The growth of children in faith under parental upringing in the Lord (Eph 6:1—4)
Mato Zovkić
Sažetak
Paul speaks of adult christians’ growth in the faith (2 Cor 10:15). Such a growth is an always new acceptance of Christ whom they have ’learned’ as well as a life ever more worthy of their christian calling (Eph 4:1,20—21). At Paul’s time the children of christian parents were probably not yet admitted to baptismal incorporation into the risen Christ, but they attended with their parents the christian liturgy which was celebrated in family homes. In such a way they were gradually enabled to share their parents’ existence 'en Hristo'. In Eph 2:20—22 the church is a construction which constantly "grows into a holy temple in the Lord." In Eph 4:15—16 the church is the body of Christ which grows up and builds itself up in love. This means that the church as an institution of salvation is bestowed with a continual growth in Christ. Ontologically, the church exists because and as long as it is the growing body of Christ. At the same time the church is also an event of salvation taking place here and now and therefore the body of Christ commissioned to grow up constantly through an active contribution of all its members. According to Eph 6:1—4 christian children should obey their parents, while christian fathers should bring their children up 'en paideia kai nouthesia Kyriou'. Paideia means here civilian and religious education; nouthesia is parental personal engagement in the process of upbringing. In the Old Testament times fathers had to hand over personally the religious heritage of Israel to their sons as bearers of national and religious identity. On that basis, it is clear that 'paideia kai nuthesia Kyriou' include primarily parental active help to the growth of their children in faith. The best contribution of christian parents to the church as the growing body of Christ is to share fully their own 'einai en Hristo' with their children, in the parental way, by instructing them in their faith and by treating them in a way befitting to the Lord.
