Sažetak
The Slavija Cinema was built in 1920 in the spirit of eclecticism, characteristic of the work of the cinema’s architect, Dionis Sunko, at the time.Built in the Lower Town area of Osijek, it was the second cinema built in Osijek(the first was the Uranija Cinema, designed by architect Viktor Axmann),which significantly enriched the city’s cultural scene. Dionis Sunko, using hisinternational education and experience, created a unique space in post-warOsijek that met the needs of the community: in addition to the educationalrole it played through film screenings, it was the center of social and entertainmentlife, which reflects the cultural significance of the building. The originalarchitectural elements of this cinema are still visible, which allows for therecognition of the original design and a sense of the culture and aesthetics ofthat period. The original urban design and solution have also been preserved, according to which a plateau was formed in front of the cinema, within thedense and fully built-up 19th-century Lower Town urban matrix, serving as aprivate vestibule separated from the predominantly residential part of the city.
