Sažetak
Musical cultural capital is a specific dimension of cultural capital, and this paper examines its transmission from parents to high school students through the lens of Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital. Parents’ institutionalized musical cultural capital was operationalized through their musical education and active involvement in music. We also treated parental engagement in the transfer of musical cultural capital—such as playing music for their children and taking them to concerts, operas, and ballets—as an independent variable. Indicators of high school students’ institutionalized musical cultural capital included their musical education, active participation in music, and attendance at concerts, ballets, and operas. The research was conducted in 2024 using an online questionnaire completed by 288 high school students from six Croatian counties. Almost half of the students, and about a quarter of their parents, reported having some form of musical education and being actively involved in music. The findings show that parents’ institutionalized and embodied musical cultural capital strongly influences the transmission of institutionalized—and to a somewhat lesser extent embodied—musical cultural capital to their children. Parental engagement also proved to be an important mechanism of intergenerational transmission. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that parents play a significant role in shaping high school students’ musical cultural capital. Since today’s high school students receive more musical education and participate more actively in music than their parents, it is reasonable to expect that they will transmit musical cultural capital even more intensively to the next generation.
