Perception of sexual situations in the library : a contribution to the research on working relationships in Croatian libraries
Ivo Tokić
Sažetak
Human sexuality is a driver that influences an individual’s behavior, including their interpersonal relationships in the workplace, in various psychological, sociological, and cultural ways. The paper explores the social interactions of librarians with fellow librarians and users that are associated with some form of sexual behavior. The research included those forms of behavior that belong to the concept of social sexual behavior, as well as sexual harassment of librarians in the workplace in Croatia. The research shows that librarians in Croatian libraries use socially sexual behavior for personal emotional satisfaction, gaining self-confidence, getting help in performing tasks or pursuing other interests of their own. Statistical significance analysis of differences was performed using the χ² test of independence to examine the association of respondent gender (male, female, I do not wish to state) with response patterns. The results show that statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were found for all questions, with the most pronounced differences for questions related to flirting on business trips and advancement through sexual behavior. The findings indicate that gender has a systematic influence on responses, which emphasizes the need to consider gender differences when interpreting the results. There are a smaller number of cases in which primarily female librarians experienced sexual harassment. And more from colleagues at work than from users. However, libraries are generally perceived by librarians as peaceful and safe work environments.
