Abstract

The mechanisms that ensure the supervision and security of the external borders of the European Union are of particular importance for the security of each member state of the Schengen area. As part of the European "smart borders" package, the paper presents two new technological solutions, the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new system that will replace the printing of classic stamps in the Schengen area. Its advantages, scope, objectives and data recorded in the system are highlighted. The EES brings a significant step towards modernising the management of the EU's external borders, as it will enable precise monitoring of entries and exits from Member States as well as refusal of entry, identification of persons who violate the period of free residence, and improvement of the fight against fraud and identity theft due to the obligation to collect biometric data. The functioning of ETIAS, its goals, advantages, application procedure, etc. are clarified, but some controversial issues arise as part of its application and automated data processing. EES and ETIAS are part of a comprehensive package of interoperability of EU information systems, and the objectives of interoperability, the concept of creation and impact on the fundamental rights of individuals and the protection of personal data will be analyzed in the paper.
