Sažetak

Although the encounter between religion and digital media dates back only a few decades, it has nonetheless provoked numerous questions among both theologians and media professionals. To be more exact, igital media are not simply tools that facilitate quicker and more effective communication, but represent a (new) communicative environment which, owing to its distinctive characteristics, enables new ways of communicating, shaping identity, relating to authority, and developing community. To understand these changes adequately, they must be interpreted within their close relationship to the postmodern cultural context. At the same time, digital media pose new challenges for religious experience, for the celebration of liturgical rites, and particularly for the formation and lived reality of spirituality, challenges that call for careful and discerning reflection. After outlining certain characteristics of the contemporary experience of spirituality, the author devotes particular attention to “digital spirituality”, highlighting two major challenges: the tendency for spirituality to become primarily a path towards the fulfilment of one’s own expectations and desires, and the question of how the relationship with transcendence is experienced and developed.
