Abstract

In this article, I present and analyse arguments and theory about what is beautiful and what is beauty, according to bishop Mahnić (1850–1920) from his article “Što je lijepo?” [“What is beautiful?”]. Mahnić advocates traditional thory of beauty and the beautiful, which is drawn mostly, but not exclusively, from St. Thomas Aquinas. Mahnić gives reasons and examples that beauty consists in unity in diversity, and that it is defined by three conditions which he took from st. Thomas Aquinas: integrity or perfection, due proportion or harmony, brightness or clarity. Mahnić also claims that what is beautiful has subjective and objective properties.
