Sažetak
Andrija Štampar was a physician who worked in the first half of the 20th century and preceded the establishment of the philosophy of medicine as a philosophcal discipline. Viewing Štampar’s ideas in the context of the philosophy of medicine imbues them with new meaning and value, as well as relevance for contemporary discussions. In this paper, I relate Andrija Štampar’s ideas to two debates within the philosophy of medicine. One debate concerns medical models, especially the biomedical model and its critiques. The second debate concerns the concept of disease and the shift toward the concept of health. Andrija Štampar provides insight into the social, psychological, and environmental factors of health that lie outside the scope of the biomedical model and call for its supplementation. Moreover, Štampar’s ideas about health and his definition of health offer an alternative approach to the discussion on the definition of disease. In this way, I place Štampar at the center of contemporary debates and currents within the philosophy of medicine. I will first present the debates on the biomedical model and the definition of disease. Then I will introduce Štampar’s social medicine, which I consider to be his theoretical framework of medicine. I will discuss psychological factors of health and present social medicine as an alternative to individual medicine. Finally, I will outline Štampar’s positive definition of health and his general view of health.
