Sažetak
At the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century, the problem of the relation between causality and teleology was one of the most widely debated issues in philosophy. The Croatian philosopher Marijan Tkalčić also took part inthese discussions. In his doctoral dissertation The Metaphysical and Gnoseological Significance of Causality and Teleology, defended in Zagreb in 1921, Tkalčić analyses a number of theories of causality (Hume, Meinong) and theories of teleology (Kant, Aquinas), as well as Wundt’s attempt to synthesise causality and teleology, in order to finally resolve their apparent contradiction in the concept of occurrence. This paper seeks to answer the question of why, according to Tkalčić, the problem of the relation between causality and teleology cannot be resolved without a philosophical determination of occurrence, and to reconstruct the argument that leads him to this conclusion.
