Abstract

The work of the Croatian philosopher, pedagogue, and professor Marijan Tkalčić (1896–1956) also encompasses logic, as evidenced by his views on its different conceptions. He devoted most of his attention to formal and dialectical logic, as well as to psychologism. While he acknowledged the technical value of formal logic, he considered it inadequate because it does not employ negation in an appropriate manner. He supported a moderate psychologism as a conception that reconciles the extremes of radical subjectivism and strict logism. He assigned the greatest importance to dialectical logic, in which he recognized the possibility of synthesizing opposites. Tkalčić’s position can also be interpreted within the broader context of Croatian logical heritage: his dialectical logic adds to the diversity of conceptions of logic in Croatian philosophical thought of the first half of the 20th century.
