Sažetak

This article presents the findings of a study examining whether the parenting style of concerted cultivation can serve as an instrument for transmitting cultural capital from parents to children, and thereby as one of the factors in the intra-class reproduction of the middle and upper social classes. For this purpose, data collected from a survey conducted on a nationally representative sample in December 2023 were analysed. Differences in the intensity of practicing three activities theoretically linked to the parenting style of concerted cultivation were tested, considering two key indicators of the parents’
class position – their socio-professional status and educational status. Results of the conducted statistical analyses suggest that more educated parents and those of higher socio-professional status, i.e., parents from the middle class and above are more likely
to practice parenting activities that more effectively transmit socio-cultural competencies from parents to children. They are more likely to enable their children to participate in organized extracurricular activities such as sports, foreign language learning, and music education, they are more involved in the school’s work and community, and they more frequently discuss school-related issues. Accordingly, research results suggest that the parenting style of concerted cultivation, which is characteristic of middle and upper classes, can also be linked to intra-class reproduction of the middle and upper social classes in Croatia.
