Sažetak
This paper analyses the physiological significance and technological challenges of nitrogen nutrition in olive trees (Olea europaea L.) within the specific agroecological conditions of the Croatian Mediterranean karst, where shallow, skeletal soils with low humus content represent the primary constraints for stable yields. Nitrogen is fundamental for photosynthetic capacity of olives tree, flower bud differentiation, and the mitigation of abiotic stress through proline accumulation; however, its efficiency in the soil decreases drastically due to rapid nitrate leaching and a lack of moisture. To overcome the limitations of traditional fertilization methods, a hybrid model is proposed that integrates precision basal fertilization, highly efficient foliar application during critical phenophases, and the use of innovative microbial nitrogen fixers (Azotobacter, Methylobacterium). Such a systematic approach enables olive growers to actively manage yields and adapt to negative climate changes, ensuring the maximum exploitation of the trees’ genetic potential regardless of the significant agroecological constraints of olive cultivation in the Mediterranean part of Croatia.
