Abstract

The undoubtedly very rich and glorious Croatian military and war history and tradition have still not been fully explored. The best proof of this are the most prominent warriors of the rank of general and admiral, who glorified the Croatian name on battlefields throughout Europe. Nine generals of the Habsburg army were born or originated around the Varaždin-Križevci Border Regiment of that time, including four generals from the area of the Križevci Prigorje region. These are generals Stjepan Mihaljević and Mihovil Mihaljević, Matija Škrinjar and Adolf Pisačić. Like other Croatian generals, they also earned their general ranks solely due to their successes on the battlefield, for which they were awarded high decorations for bravery and command of units. Based on the decorations they earned, they were given titles of nobility. Although they were Habsburg generals, they expressed their respect and connection to their native land by choosing the noble adjectives “of Sveti Ivan” and “of Hižanovac”.
