Sažetak
In the former Royal Gymnasium in Rijeka, founded in 1627, two outstanding Croatian scientists worked in the 19th century: Fran Kurelac (Bruvno in Lika, 1811 – Zagreb, 1874) and Tadija Smičiklas (Reštovo Žumberačko, 1843 – Zagreb, 1914), both members of the Yugoslav (today Croatian) Academy of Sciences and Arts. Kurelac worked at the Rijeka gymnasium from January 1849 to 1854, and during that period he had a strong influence on the teaching and student community. Smičiklas, who was thirty-two years younger, worked there from 1870 to 1873. In the archives of today’s First Sušak Croatian Gymnasium in Rijeka, a school that is the successor to the former Royal Gymnasium in Rijeka, school documentation from the period of their work at the gymnasium has been preserved. Also, based on Smičiklas’ correspondence to Kurelac stored in the Archives of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, an outline of their relationship and the influence of Kurelac on Smičiklas will be provided.
