SOME FEATURES OF FILM MUSIC BY ARSEN DEDIĆ
* Dopisni autor.
Sažetak
Arsen Dedić composed around eighty pieces for short, medium-length, feature, and documentary films, as well as television series and mini-series, and this paper focuses on his work in feature film production. In order to demonstrate the functionality and breadth of composer’s techniques, five films have been selected for analysis—the children's film Train in the Snow (Vlak u snijegu, 1976), the comedy-drama Southbound Train (Vlakom prema jugu, 1981), the dramatic thriller The Glembays (Glembajevi, 1988), the war film Donor (Donator, 1989), and the social drama Stela (Stela, 1990)—which are, due to their genre diversity, suitable for examining the main characteristics of their musical dimension. The methodological approach includes the thematic features of the music, the choice of musical forms and styles, and the manner in which musical elements are used (particularly melody, harmony, tonality, timbre, and instrumentation). An overview of the musical analyses shows that Dedić’s film music is characterised by thematic diversity (themes vary in number as well as in whether they are linked to characters, situations, or general concepts), the lyricism and simplicity of melodic lines, straightforward harmonic language, evocative sound, layering of instruments, and stylistic variety (elements of contemporary, Baroque, Romantic, French, Balkan, and other musical idioms). With these qualities in the said films, Dedić brings closer the setting in terms of time and place, defines the atmosphere, sketches character traits, highlights what is essential both within and beyond the frame, foreshadows the narrative line, shapes the viewer’s perception, and more—thus skilfully achieving some of the main functions of film music.
