Sažetak
This paper deals with the relationship between myth and fairy tale as literary genres. It analyzes literary-theoretical facts as well as the characteristics that define both concepts. It reflects on the most important stylistic features and the basic characteristics of fairy tales and myths. Fairy tales and myths represent two prominent genres within oral and written literature that have played a key role throughout history in conveying moral values, cultural norms, and historical events. Although both genres are based on narratives that often include fantastic and supernatural elements, their purpose, narrative structures, and reception by audiences differ significantly. Myth and fairy tale are forms of demanding structure, and it is sometimes common to arrive at the fairy tale through myth. The telling of myths and fairy tales has lasted from the beginning of time to the present day in order to convey what cannot otherwise be expressed in language. Myth as a literary genre represents a linguistic formation that, based on mythical experience, shapes the story of the origin of the world, people, phenomena, and nations. The fairy tale is a literary genre in which wondrous and supernatural elements prevail, interwoven with realistic elements. Many authors have created artistic fairy tales enriched with mythological elements. The paper will show that the fairy tale offers different solutions than the myth, thus pointing to their distinctiveness. Although mythical consciousness and fragments of the mythical are often visible in fairy tales, these two literary genres have very different functions. The study of fairy tales and myths is important not only for their literary significance but also for their role in shaping social and cultural values.
