Three Centuries of Theatre in Požega
Kazimir Balog
; Trg Sv. Trojstva 20, Požega, Hrvatska
Sažetak
Požega has a long theatrical tradition of over three centuries, which is exceptional compared to other cities in the vicinity or even to those further away. From the first theatrical performance in 1715 until the present day theatre audience in Požega has enjoyed the performances of amateur actors, travelling theatres, Požega’s professional ensemble, and prominent writers, as well as performances by famous names of the Croatian theatre born in Požega. Požega is a town that was named “the Athens of Slavonia” when it was at the peak of its development. Not even 20 years after the Ottomans had left or were driven from these parts, Toma Matić documents a performance of a play, the title of which is unfortunately not known, and that was held in the courtyard of the Jesuit Collegium on 27th August, 1715, and that the Požega audience enjoyed. As early as 1727, the first theatre was built in Požega, and its remains can be recognized in the chapel of the former convent of the sisters of St. Vincent. During that time, performances were held in different venues, always before a full audience. The fact that the Volunteer Theater Society was founded in 1879 shows how much theatre was appreciated. Soon after that, the first amateur city theatre was founded as well. Numerous travelling theaters were welcomed in Požega at the time, and the foundation of the professional theatre in 1948 gave Požega a new incentive, employing about 20 theatre professionals at one time. Up to its end in 1956, the actors’ ensemble had prepared 83 premieres, mostly of theatre classics. The end of professional theatre was not, fortunately, the end of theatre performance since amateur theatre flourished in the ensuing decades, earning Požega a great number of state and republic awards. That resulted in the fact that actors from Požega are nowadays employed by the most eminent domestic theatres.
