Critical Reception of Drama Productions at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb in “Vijenac” from 2000 to 2024

This paper presents an analysis of reviews of dramatic productions at the Croatian National Theatre (HNK) in Zagreb, published in the journal “Vijenac” from 2000 to 2024. A total of 116 reviews were examined using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The aim was to assess the critical reception of these productions, categorized by critics and playwrights, and to identify revailing evaluative tendencies. The three most prolific critics, Andrija Tunjić (noted for his highly critical tone), and the more moderate Mira Muhoberac and Marija Grgičević, authored nearly half of all texts. The most frequently staged authors were Miroslav Krleža and William Shakespeare, each with eight productions, although their works generally received predominantly negative reviews. Critics focused primarily on acting performances, followed by directorial approaches, while scenography, costume design, music, and comparisons with earlier productions were also regularly discussed. The majority of reviews expressed a neutral value judgment (37), followed by moderately positive (29) and moderately negative (22). Strongly positive and strongly negative reviews were equally represented (14 each), indicating a slight tendency toward positive as sessments. Overall, the productions of the Drama ensemble in the Croatian National Theatre were perceived as being of average quality. They were competently staged but lacked a stronger artistic impact or aesthetic innovation that would make them particularly relevant within the context of contemporary theatre.
