Text and paratext of the Book of Judith by Ignac Kristijanović – historicity, seduction, chivalry

Sažetak
Ignac Kristijanović (1796–1884), a priest of the Zagreb Archdiocese, was a religious author, popular educator, grammarian and translator of several books of the Holy Scripture, some of which were published in his lectionaries, the calendar Danica zagrebečka or unfortunately remained in manuscript. In Danica zagrebečka »for the summer of 1846.« Kristijanović published Knjiga Judite iz Svetoga pisma Staroga zakona na horvatski prenešena po Ignacu Kristijanović, kapelskem plebanušu (Book of Judith from the Holy Scripture of the Old Testament translated into Croatian by Ignac Kristijanović, a chapel presbyter), equipping it with various paratextual notes, such as the introduction, chapter titles and footnotes from which his translation and editorial intention is evident. Krstijanović presents Judith in the context of a canonical book and an example of the chivalric act of a biblical heroine, that may and must be read for learning and admonition, but his primary focus is on highlighting the dynamic and interesting plot, with which he wants to attract readers. In the footnotes, however, he provides various historical and geographical explanations so that readers may more easily follow and understand the narrative, but also moral ones because he considers it necessary to justify Judith’s deception undertaken in the name of a higher goal. Kristijanović is bound by the customs of his time, that the translation must be literal and from the Vulgate, and his communicativeness is ensured by the paratext, to achieve his dual goal, the teaching and entertainment of the reader. At the junction of the two is a critical point, Judith’s deception and the murder of Holofernes, on the resolution of which the success of Kristijanović’s translationological endeavor depends.
