Marulić’s Judith in Esperanto

Sažetak
On the Occasion of the 500th Anniversary of the Death of Marko Marulić (1450–1524), the “father of Croatian literature,” special attention is given to his most renowned work — the epic Judith, written in 1501. Although it was published in 1521, centuries passed before it was translated into a foreign language. It was not until 1991 that American Slavic scholar Henry R. Cooper Jr. translated Judith into English. Translations into Hungarian, Italian, French, and Lithuanian followed, along with excerpts translated into several other languages. Among these, a significant place belongs to the translation into Esperanto, the international language, which launched Judith on a new journey across the world. The epic was translated by the distinguished Croatian Esperantist Lucija Borčić (1921–2015). The Esperanto translation carries additional importance when one considers that the century-long history of Esperanto in Croatia has been inscribed in the Register of Protected Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia (No. Z-7298). This translation contributes to the international recognition of Judith, not only within Slavic studies but also far beyond. Esperanto thus becomes one of the channels through which Croatian cultural heritage achieves global presence.
