Marulić in Contemporary Croatian Music – Missa Maruliana by Frano Parać

Sažetak
In the oeuvre of contemporary Croatian composer and academician Frano Parać (Split, 1948), the vocal-instrumental composition Missa Maruliana occupies an almost canonical place. Commissioned by the Croatian National Theater in Split in 1993, the work was recently published as a printed score and recorded on a CD that received four Porin Discography Award nominations in 2024. This paper explores the circumstances surrounding the creation of the work, its musical characteristics, stylistic features, and how Parać combined the Latin Gregorian Mass text with the Alleluia movement, in which Marulić’s prayer verse is actually a verse of the Alleluia chant: “Raise my voice from below to the burning heaven, where the holy choirs worship your throne. Hallelujah!” The year of the Homeland War was also a time when the composer felt it important to pay homage to the father of Croatian literature, Marko Marulić, and to offer, through music, a form of témoignage—a testimony about a man and his people caught in the whirlwind of war. Throughout the mass, Parać remains musically rooted in tonality and harmonies deeply immersed in tradition. Missa Maruliana was awarded the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) Prize. On that occasion, Ivan Supičić wrote the following words, which were included in the recently published score (Zagreb, HAZU, 2022): “At a time when many artists and pseudo-artists reached for ephemeral and peripheral themes and problems, Frano Parać knew how to tap into the human essence in his work and create— through the synthesis of traditional and his own contemporary compositional styles—a work of powerful impact: poignant and communicative, multi layered and rich in meaning, in which the depth of philosophical thought is meaningfully combined with a message from one of us, echoing from a distant past—a message for our time.”
