Analogia Temporalis: Understanding The Trinity With Marijan Cipra

Abstract
The article traces the development of Marijan Cipra’s understanding of the Holy Trinity, starting from his early work On the Genesis of Human History, where he expresses hope that through “intellectual intuition” it is possible to “perfectly comprehend” the mysteries of the Christian faith, to his main work Metamorphoses of Metaphysics, where the persons of the Trinity are seen as a theological perspective (or even a “pictorial” representation) of the “supertranscendentals” of his ontologically grounded “schema of being,” and finally to his late philosophia perennis understood as Christian philosophy, when he accepts that certain truths of faith—including the Holy Trinity—can only be reached through Revelation. Nevertheless, drawing on Przywara’s “three Grundrichtungen of consciousness,” which we also recognize in Augustine’s analogy of the Holy Trinity with the three “faculties of the soul,” we attempt to understand the relationship between the “temporal” (past, present, future) and the Trinity in Metamorphoses of Metaphysics as a distinctive form of the analogy of being, termed (borrowing from E. R. Schlesinger) analogia temporalis.
