Changes in Local Residents’ Segments Based on Reactions Towards Tourism: An Eighteen-Year Perspective

Sažetak
Local residents' reactions to tourism play a central role in the tourism literature. Clustering studies are essential
for developing policies to address the expectations of groups with different perceptions of tourism. Although
such studies have increased in recent decades, most are single-wave. Consequently, further research based on
repeated measurements over extended periods is necessary to provide a broader understanding of tourismrelated
societal changes over time. This study spans an 18-year period and employs a multi-stage analytical
approach, using hierarchical, non-hierarchical, and two-step clustering techniques. The findings indicate
that no clusters exhibit exclusively positive or negative perceptions; rather, all clusters recognise both benefits
and costs. Moreover, the results highlight a decline in the proportion of residents with strongly positive or
negative perceptions. Meanwhile, the number of individuals who are indifferent to tourism has increased. By
integrating Social Exchange Theory and Social Representations Theory, this study illustrates how local communities’
perceptions of tourism have evolved over time and provides crucial insights for long-term tourism
development. In this context, it emphasises the necessity for more responsive tourism management strategies
and more inclusive and multidimensional policies.
