Sažetak

Aim: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the correlation between haematological parameters in children with bronchiolitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus and clinical features of the disease and to assess their predictive value. Patients and methods: The study was cross-sectional, including 100 children hospitalized at the Paediatric Department at General Hospital in Požega from 2010 to 2022 due to bronchiolitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus. The data were collected from medical records. Complete blood count and C-reactive protein were obtained to all participants with clinical features of acute bronchiolitis with respiratory syncytial virus isolated from nasopharyngeal swab. For statistical analysis, the chi-squared test, Mann−Whitney U test, Spearman correlation coefficient (Rho) and binary logistic regression were used. Results: With regard to oxygen dependence, erythrocyte values are significantly lower (p 0.030) and significantly more patients have platelet count above the reference range (p 0.030) in the oxygen-dependent group, compared to subjects who are not oxygen-dependent. C - reactive protein was not associated with the presence of pneumonia and oxygen dependence. The higher the values of platelets were, and the lower the values of MPV, the longer was the duration of the disease. Conclusion: Children with lower erythrocyte value and higher platelets during the hospitalization due to bronchiolitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus, have higher risk for oxygen dependency, leading to more difficult course of disease. C-reactive protein was not significantly related to the severity of the disease.
