Sažetak
This review article provides a systematic retrospective insight into four decades of scientific research in the field of reproductive genetics at the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Medicine, with particular emphasis on the development of research infrastructure, the establishment of scientific teams, and the construction of an internationally recognised research profile. The research activities encompassed key areas of reproductive medicine, including infertility, medically assisted reproduction, idiopathic recurrent spontaneous miscarriage, and idiopathic spontaneous preterm birth. Over nearly forty years, a continuous research programme has been developed, incorporating genetic association studies, epigenetic investigations, and contemporary metabolomic approaches, thereby marking a transition from classical candidate gene studies towards integrative and translational research models. The paper analyses scientific output, the implementation of national and international research projects, and completed doctoral theses as indicators of scientific sustainability and generational continuity. Special attention is given to the development and establishment of the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics as a recognised centre for research in reproductive genetics, whose work has contributed to the regional and international visibility of the Faculty. This review therefore represents not only a chronological account of achievements, but also an analytical reflection on the scientific trajectory, strategic decisions, and future directions in the development of reproductive genetics.
