Abstract
Exploration and exploitation of mineral resources have been continuously conducted across Varaždin County, as their results form the basis for shaping key development policies and investment plans essential for the future economic growth of the region. The aim of this study is to assess the geo-energy potential of Varaždin County, with particular emphasis on geothermal waters, hydrocarbons, and the possibilities of underground natural gas storage and permanent carbon dioxide sequestration (CCS). The purpose of the research is to provide a scientific basis for the sustainable use of these resources, to stimulate further research and investment, and to enhance energy security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The applied methods include an integrated analysis of geological, geophysical, borehole and hydrogeological data, interpretation of seismic surveys to identify faults and structures favourable for hydrocarbon and geothermal accumulation, geochemical analysis of source rocks and fluids to assess hydrocarbon generation and migration potential, structural–stratigraphic evaluation of reservoir and cap rocks for CCS, and 3D geological–geophysical modelling of parts of the Mura Basin, the Ormož–Selnica Anticline and the western slopes of Mt. Kalnik. The results indicate that Varaždin County possesses significant geo-energy potential. The presence of gas and oil accumulations (Veliki Otok, Cvetkovec, Strmec Podravski, Legrad) has been confirmed, with hydrocarbon migration controlled by fault systems and sandstones, carbonates, breccias and dolomites acting as potential reservoir rocks. The pre-Cenozoic carbonate complex with Triassic dolomites exhibits elevated temperatures and well-developed secondary porosity, making it suitable for geothermal systems, cogeneration and industrial use, with the Lunjkovec–Kutnjak exploitation field identified as a priority site. Triassic carbonates overlain by Cenozoic clastic sequences and the depleted Cvetkovec oil field have been identified as technically and geologically suitable reservoirs for permanent CO₂ storage, subject to additional 3D seismic investigations and cap-rock integrity assessment. In conclusion, Varaždin County has a diverse geo-energy potential that can significantly contribute to the energy transition by supporting the development of geothermal energy, limited hydrocarbon exploitation and the implementation of CCS technologies.
