Abstract

Rural tourism in Slavonia is increasingly recognised as a means for a balanced and long-term sustainable development of the regions, whose main characteristics are the natural environment, diverse cultural heritage and rich traditions. Its development promotes economic diversification, creates new jobs and revitalises settlements affected by demographic and economic decline. Through strategic investment in education, tourism infrastructure and promotion, Slavonia can build a strong position as an authentic rural destination. The sustainability of rural tourism is based on the preservation of local natural and cultural resources. Agrotourism, ecotourism and themed ethno-villages allow visitors to experience the local way of life while empowering local producers and craftsmen. Sustainable business practises include the use of local food, the preservation of traditional knowledge and customs. In addition to local gastronomy, attractive events, hunting tourism and protected natural areas enrich the tourist offer and stimulate economic activity. The development of accommodation facilities in the form of family households enables longer stays for guests and greater social benefits for the local community. The sustainable development of rural tourism in Slavonia requires coordinated co-operation between key stakeholders – the local government, the private sector, family businesses and the local population. With responsible planning and rational management of resources, it is possible to ensure a balance between growth and conservation and make rural tourism a stable model for future regional development. The aim of the study is to analyse the importance of rural tourism for the sustainable development of Slavonia, focusing on its impact on the local population, the preservation of cultural heritage and the protection of natural resources.
