Sažetak

The co-evolution of climate, biophysical environment, water management and civilisations in Dalmatia from antiquity to modern times is briefly presented. Different civilisations and water management cultures existed in the Dalmatian area, which is evident in its material and immaterial heritage. Water management mitigated problems caused by climate change, supported societal development and safety, strengthened a secure supply of water, food and energy and a protection from climate risks. The civilisations that considered water and water management important for society development advanced and survived, even in unfavourable climate periods, unlike those that did not. For these reasons, studying water management development means indirect studying of patterns and changes in societal development, i.e. insights into co-evolution patterns of climate, biophysical environment, water management and society development represent a necessary experience and knowledge for planning the resilience of a society to climate change.
