Sažetak
Urban sludge generated during wastewater treatment is an important, although still underused potential raw material in circular economy. A more appropriate biorefinery approach can facilitate the recovery of various biocompounds, thus converting sludge into a valuable resource aligned with the global tendency of environmental protection and waste conversion into useful products that can find their application in different industries.
The recovery of volatile fatty acids, plastics, proteins, enzymes and pesticides presents only some potential ways of valorising sludge as raw material, and, for this reason, the paper presents the research related to their production and potential application. The factors affecting the process efficiency are listed. An overview of their composition and characteristics, as well as the limitations and future prospects of biocompound production are also included. The characteristics of different processes of material recovery from sludge are described in detail, with data on their efficiency, feasibility and present status included as well. The objective is to draw attention to new insights into the development of sustainable sludge management practices and the promotion of circular bioeconomy principles in the field of wastewater treatment
