Sažetak
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection represents a significant global public health problem. HBV infection is a major cause of chronic liver disease and the leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma. Primary prevention of HBV infection is based on effective and safe vaccination, which also prevents hepatitis D virus infection.
The hepatitis B vaccine has been in use for more than forty years. Therefore, this review aims to present the available scientific evidence on the efficacy and safety of hepatitis B vaccination, with particular emphasis on findings from systematic reviews and meta-analyses, including current vaccination guidelines for the general population and high- groups, existing knowledge regarding the duration of vaccine-induced immune response, as well as the clinical and economic benefits of hepatitis B vaccination.
