Friar Petar Lubina (1951 – 2022) in the Light of the Synodal Church: Editorial, Pastoral and Pilgrimaging Contributions

Abstract
The paper analyses the multifaceted contributions of Friar Petar Lubina (1951 – 2022), a prominent Croatian Mariologist, in the light of contemporary Church Synodality. The authors explore how Lubina’s four decades of editorial work at the Catholic journal Marija, his scholarly contributions within the Croatian Mariological Institute, and his extensive pastoral practice correlate with the tenets of a »Church that journeys together.« The first part of the study briefly presents his biography, and examines his editorial work as a platform for dialogue between theology and popular piety. The central part of the paper focuses on the theological connection between his »Mariology of the Way« and the documents of the Synod on Synodality, with a particular emphasis on the Blessed Virgin Mary as an exemplar of listening and companionship. The paper highlights how Lubina’s Mariology and pastoral approach anticipate the key principles of the synodal Church: listening, common discernment, the inclusion of the laity, and the Marian dimension of the Church’s journey. The concept of pilgrimage, present both in Lubina’s literary expression and in his pilgrimaging practice, emerges as a powerful manifestation of the synodal journey of the people of God. The paper concludes that the work and legacy of Friar Petar Lubina represent a valuable contribution to the development of synodal consciousness in Croatian Church.
