Structural Design and Fatigue Analysis of Irregular Pinholes in Forged Steel Pistons

Sažetak

Fatigue wear and seizure failure of piston pinholes in engines are critical factors that hinder the improvement of engine power output. A piston with a non-circular pinhole structure was innovatively designed based on the deformation clearance fitting characteristics of piston pins and pinholes during service. The power law function equations governing both the internal and external contour curves of the piston pinholes were developed. A parametric three-dimensional piston assembly model was established using the UG software and imported into ANSYS for finite element-based multi-objective simulation analysis of the irregular pinhole structures with different power law coefficients. Subsequent fatigue wear tests on piston pinholes showed that slight adjustments to the power law coefficient of contour curves resulted in a 17% reduction in the pinhole contact pressure, a 42% improvement in the pin boss fatigue safety, and a 16% enhancement in the pinhole fatigue safety. Experimental observations confirmed significantly improved fatigue wear conditions at the top surface of the pinhole after slight adjustments to the power law coefficients of the piston pinhole contour curve.
