Sažetak
This paper presents the life and work of Anđeo
Antun Frari (Šibenik, 1780 – Venice, 1865), a physician
from Šibenik. He completed his medical studies
in Padua (1801) and continued his professional
training in Vienna under the renowned Johann Peter
Frank, a prominent physician in the field of social
medicine and public health. After returning to Dalmatia,
Frari worked as a municipal physician and
head of the Split lazaretto (1806–1821). His efforts
and achievements in improving the quarantine system
and sanitary conditions in Dalmatia were considerable,
aiming to enhance the living conditions
of the local population and prevent the spread of infectious
diseases. During the French administration
in Dalmatia (1805–1813), Frari contributed to the drafting of the Health Law (1812), in which, largely
owing to his influence, particular attention was devoted
to epidemic prevention. Following the re-establishment
of Austrian rule in Dalmatia, Frari left
Split for political reasons and moved to Italy (1822).
He spent the final decades of his life in Venice, where
he completed his major work on the history of plague
entitled Della peste e della pubblica amministrazione
sanitaria (Venice, 1840). This book is regarded as an
outstanding historical, epidemiological, and public
health study of the plague. Frari is considered the
first Croatian historian of medicine.
