Artificial Intelligence, Disinformation and Trust in Military Institutional Communication

Sažetak
The development of artificial intelligence has changed the way information is produced, distributed, and perceived in the public sphere. For public institutions, this transformation has presented a clear challenge: maintaining credibility in an environment where false content can be easily generated and disseminated. In this regard, this paper analyzes how Romania’s Ministry of National Defense (MApN) addresses the topic of artificial intelligence in its discourse, from the perspective of managing credibility and institutional perception in a changing information environment. The study is based on a mix of qualitative methods, using both content analysis (to identify themes and communication patterns) and discourse analysis (to interpret how artificial intelligence is constructed and positioned in institutional discourse). The corpus consists of posts published by the Romanian Ministry of National Defense on Facebook and Instagram between May 2025 and May 2026. The results suggest that references to AI in the Ministry’s communication appear within a predominantly defensive framework, with the institution using these references primarily to flag false content, but also to intervene in clarifying information in the public sphere.
