Abstract

Saint Jerome is one of the most prominent church fathers of the beginnings of Christianity. His life and works influenced the formation of Christian consciousness of Croatian people. The subject of this paper is a brief overview of the first Croatian translation of the selected epistles of St. Jerome, undertaken by the Franciscan friar Ivan Marković of Sinj. The aim of the first part of the paper is to briefly present the character and work of Fr. Ivan Marković, the translator of Jerome’s Epistles, and then, in the second part of the paper, provide a synthetic view of his translation endeavour that confirms Marković’s excellent theological and philosophical education, as well as his translation skills. Marković’s two-volume translation of the selected epistles of St. Jerome remains a major work even today, since there is no new Croatian translation which would contain not only the selected but all Jerome’s epistles.
